Enrollment to Medicare

Filed under: EDC Systems, Medicare — clinnovo @ 2:17 pm

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Standard Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) Enrollment Form must be completed prior to submitting electronic media claims (EMC) or other EDI transactions to Medicare.

The form with details where it should be mailed to : http://www.cms.hhs.gov/cmsforms/downloads/cms855s.pdf

The agreement must be executed by each provider of health care services, physician, or supplier that intends to submit EMC or use EDI, either directly with Medicare or through a billing service or clearinghouse.

Each new EMC biller must sign the form and submit it to their local Medicare carrier, durable medical equipment regional carrier (DMERC), or fiscal intermediary.

An organization comprising of multiple components that have been assigned Medicare provider numbers, supplier numbers, or UPINs may elect to execute a single EDI Enrollment Form on behalf of the organizational components to which these numbers have been assigned. The organization as a whole is held responsible for the performance of its components.

Once the form is signed each biller gets a NPI (National Provider Identifier) that will be used for electronic transactions with CMS.

MEDICARE & Data management/SAS/Analyst Jobs

Filed under: Insurance, Medicare — clinnovo @ 12:08 am

For the totally uninitiated “Medicare is a social insurance program administered by the United States government, providing health insurance coverage to people who are either age 65 and over, or who meet other special criteria.”

Medicare itself is divided into four parts:
  • Part A: Hospital Insurance
  • Part B: Medical Insurance
  • Part C: Medicare Advantage plans
  • Part D: Prescription Drug plans
Medicare is a trillion dollar industry (1.2 trillion USD to be accurate), and is a thorny issue in US health care. The prime importance of medicare is at two levels : 1. It sets the payment levels for health care service levels, 2. Apart from the premium most of the cost is born by US federal government.
Medicare has great similarities to clinical data management and SAS is used for analytics. We have noticed a large demand for CDM/SAS skilled in this domain, but they want added understanding of insurance workflow. We will cover medicare all parts in detail and jump into the technicalities of managing medicare data and data analysis in the multi-post series starting from June 9th.
